Action Comedy Musical Romance

4.9 / 10

This film was Peter Bogdanovich's homage to musical comedies of the 1930s. A millionaire named Michael Oliver Pritchard III and a singer named Kitty O'Kelly meet and fall in love. Meanwhile, an indigent woman named Brooke Carter and an Italian gambler named Johnny Spanish meet and fall in love. All four people meet each other and become friends (actually, Kitty and Brooke had been friends since high-school), and soon, Brooke's crude, fun-loving maid Elizabeth falls in love with Michael's valet Rodney James. Later on, Michael and Brooke fall in love, and Kitty and Johnny decide to follow them around. In order to make Brooke and Michael jealous, they try to look like they are falling in love as well. Eventually, Michael and Johnny get into a fight but then immediately make up. Soon, Brooke and Kitty make up. The two couples pair off successfully and they live happily ever after.

I saw this film in 1975 at Radio City Music Hall. The latest versions that everyone watches today is not the same one that was at the premiere. The editing is different, some scenes are missing, and even the beginning has been changed. But the original director Peter Bogdanovich has approved of the new version. I would still like to have been able to watch and/or purchase the original version but like the Star Wars movies you may never be able to buy the original theatrical version because they simply don't want you to have it. - @Sunday, April 9, 2017 5:53 AM

This film is why Peter Bogdonovitch doesn't have a directing career today. - @Thursday, July 14, 2016 1:14 AM

This is one of a few movies ever made that had live singing. Movies usually use lip syncing. All the singing is usually prerecorded and then the actors lip sync during the filming. Not so with this movie. - @Friday, June 3, 2016 9:19 AM

I love this. What memories. During the dawn of cable in the SF Bay Area this was one of the few films released. My little sister and I watched it about a hundred times and learned all the songs. We even bought the album. Is it available on cd? Can't find it. - @Thursday, February 19, 2015 2:00 PM

PARODY - it's supposed to be silly.  I love seeing Burt Reynolds in this role.  What a hoot. It just proves that he wasn't too cool to go out on a limb - way before people were doing Dancing with the Stars. - @Friday, November 7, 2014 1:31 PM

I totally agree. I saw it on TV and thought it had some really great parts. There are a LOT of worse movies that are huge successes. Also, when a movie flops, that doesn't mean it was bad, it just meant that it never found its audience. As someone who loves old-time musicals, and loves the stars of this film, I think it should be given a chance and be released on DVD. - @Tuesday, February 12, 2013 8:35 PM

I know that some consider this a terrible film, and was a total flop, for which the director took out ads to apologize for it. However, I really like it. I guess you have to love this particular cast. Great actors. Also, you have to really love old-time musicals and Cole Porter's great music. Seriously, it is terrible that this film has NEVER been released in ANY format. I would LOVE to have it on DVD. To hell with the critics!! - @Tuesday, February 12, 2013 8:30 PM

I've seen it...the most horrible misuse of good music since "Moulin Rouge". - @Sunday, August 19, 2012 2:54 AM

Timeout: Better still, the brittle, clipped world of Porter's songs is perfectly evoked. It may be a movie we'll come back to later and find we all like it. - @Thursday, August 9, 2012 2:02 AM

JoshMich1985
TimeOut: Everybody hated Bogdanovich's homage, a trivial story slotted round some Cole Porter songs. It's an indulgent movie - but it's also a neat parody of '30s musicals, with sets nodding to Van Nest Polglase. - @Thursday, August 9, 2012 2:01 AM

Ranch Mubay
Esquire: "it may be the worst movie musical of this – or any – decade." The Buffalo News: "About 45 minutes in, it became apparent to one and all that this was one of the worst and most embarrassing major-talent turkeys of all time." Included in The Fifty Worst Films of All Time, Michael Sauter's The Worst Films of All Time and The Golden Turkey Award (Worst Achievements in Hollywood History "destroys sixteen beautiful Col Porter melodies..) - @Thursday, July 26, 2012 6:47 AM

@8jbird From what I found out, the film was so bad with the "bad" songs, lame story, flat choreograthy, and the lame voices even though the film had no lyp-syncing. It only got $2.5 million at the box office calling it a box office bomb. In fact the director, Peter Bogdanovich, wote and posted an apology letter for it. It was one of the worst films ever made. That's why it's not on vhs/dvd. Find it at your own risk. - @Friday, December 23, 2011 9:05 PM

I LOVE this film. Hilarious. Eileen Brennan is wonderful. And Madeline Kahn!!! Love the black and white theme. Why is this not available anywhere? So what if it was a commercial flop. I want it. - @Thursday, November 24, 2011 3:00 PM
