I didn't really plan on watching the movie just because Cumberbatch was in it. But I wanted to hear him sing that song so I watched his clip. Now I want to watch the movie because of that one line, "I don't understand this meanness" by Chris Cooper. That was such a wonderful clip. - @Wednesday, September 26, 2018 6:45 PM

This was an amazing film. I saw it two years ago and had completely forgotten the name or what it was about. I posted a very vague description on facebook asking if anyone knew of a family drama involving a mean old lady. Someone guessed it right lol - @Saturday, December 30, 2017 6:04 AM

Yes this movie is amazing, a show of great film making. Now, I knew it even after initial five minutes of film introducing Sam Shepard and Meryl Streep and Misty Upham. Whata an ensemble of 5 minutes of perfect acting! Really, stunning. And just one day ago I also watched Mr. Holmes with Ian McKellen and The girl on the train with Emily Blunt. All great actors the people I mentioned, buuuuut unlike John Wells, the other 2 directors simply ruined the movies and the great McKellan and Blunt couldn't save them even though their performances were fabulous. So, you cna have a dream team performing, and still if the coach cusck the result sucks bigtime. Bravo, John Wells. - @Saturday, January 7, 2017 10:45 AM

Okay, why does this trailer depict this movie as a comedy? It is a serious, heartbreaking movie. Liked it a lot and have never seen a better performance by Meryl Streep ( I haven't seen a lot of her films though) - @Thursday, April 14, 2016 5:21 AM

Great movie if you enjoy strong acting. Excellent cast. This was based off the Pulitzer winning play of the same name. Definitely not a 'happy' movie, though. - @Monday, April 11, 2016 2:05 PM

I really enjoyed this movie! What a remarkable film. This is what real drama supposed to look like. I did not find this film boring, but fascinating to watch a dysfunctional family going through such a terrible dramatic tragedy. And worst of all what kind of secrets they've kept from each other. I'm a little disappointed it didn't win an Oscar. Anywho, this is definitely one of my all time favorite films. - @Monday, March 7, 2016 9:41 AM

People with no family issues will probably find this movie boring... But we who can recognize and realte to it seek great comfort in it. It makes us feel like we're not the only ones.. And that's why it's such a great movie. Real and complicated - @Tuesday, February 23, 2016 11:32 PM

Misadventures with angry alcoholics, bullies, narcissists
One of the best depictions I have seen yet of a toxic, abusive, substance addicted family. Some families are actually worse than this, yes worse. The sibling relationships were actually "better" in this movie than many sibling relationships in these kinds of families are. This is because parents who are abusive active alcoholics and abusive substance addicted often scapegoat one child (i.e. use the child as the family punching bag). Once the child leaves (sometimes for good), then the child is replaced by another sibling as the new scapegoat. The siblings then resent each other so much, they can barely speak to each other. Substance addicted and abusive families also have terrible secrets that they bring out during traumatic times (adding to an already devastating situation to increase shock and drama). The dinner table scenes were accurate. Chiding a child for being a vegetarian (the child is vegetarian for empathetic reasons) is very accurate too. I have seen it. Empathy is looked at as a weakness in abusive families and empathetic members are used as a laughing stock and derided in this way. A number of the commentators on this movie deride it as a bullying, narcissistic, blaming miserable movie -- no, it isn't the movie's fault, or the director's fault: it is just trying to show as accurately as possible how these families are. For those survivors of families like this, it is a beginning of a long discussion. If you are a survivor you will be able to relate to it. If you are not a survivor, you will shake your head and wonder why the world needs to see this. But many don't want to see slavery, or southern lynchings, or the Native American genocide -- but being aware has made the world a better world. This movie can do the same. - @Sunday, January 17, 2016 4:01 PM

I watched this movie 1-2 months ago and this is a very entertaining movie! It has an all star cast with one of my top favorite actresses Meryl Streep and also stars other favorites of mine Dermot Mulroney, Julia Roberts and Juliette Lewis! It gives you a good example of what a dysfunctional family is like. I can really relate. - @Friday, January 15, 2016 4:11 AM

MakingAmerica GreatAgain
If you hate southerners, you'll hate this movie.  If you expect a happy ending or else it wasn't a good movie to you, then this won't be a good movie to you.  If you are looking for someone who was not very likable in the beginning of the movie to be redeemed into someone more considerate and likable to others during this movie, you won't find that in this movie.  This movie received 64% on Rotten Tomatoes. Other top movies that came out in 2013 were Gravity(97%) astronaut woman makes it back to Earth ok(hooray), 12 Years a Slave(96%) black man mistaken for slave gets freedom after 12 years(hooray), Before Midnight(98%) Couple almost splits up but decides not to(hooray)..the list of the 90% ALL have happy endings and most have great people with altruistic motives loving others more than themselves. I believe that's one of the reasons this film didn't get nominated, everyone wants a bad situation turned into a good job happy ending pat on the back.  I, like the silent majority, thought this film was better than all the others nominated.  It was real.  It threw all of life's stresses out on a table and watched people eat and deal with it. Death,disease,divorce,drugs..you name it, it's got it..the same stuff familes deal with all across America.  That's what I liked about it most, it was very American and very true to life, the life we know, not the life we want to know. - @Monday, August 24, 2015 9:27 AM
