Question:  Who is that good looking man behind James Earl Jones at 1:54 ?Answer:  That's me at age 30 ;-)  I was an extra during my assignment as a Sergeant with the Old Guard.  But I played a recently discharged Vet from Vietnam who has served with the deceased.  It was a very hot day in July or August and Director Coppola was still grieving at the loss of his son in a boating accident in May.   BTW, Jones was a phenomenal person, very warm and kind to us on location at ANC.  This was a very good experience I'll always remember. - @Sunday, October 2, 2016 1:45 AM

Te uniform badges say most of the guardsmen are Vietnam combat veterans. They're infantry branch (crossed rifles)most have the blue and silver combat infantry's man's badgeand most are wearing the VietnameseOrder ofGallantryawarded by the RSVNuntil the USA created its Vietnam campaign medal. - @Tuesday, August 30, 2016 2:43 AM

This was James Caan's comeback movie, since he's not made a movie since Thief, and Francis Ford Coppola directed, but the young, non-Brat Pack newcomer in the role of the fallen soldier was not that great. This movie had so much potential, but lasted maybe 2 weeks in theaters. Even Anjelica Huston, James Earl Jones, and Lawrence Fishburne couldn't save it. - @Thursday, July 28, 2016 3:48 AM

saw American Sniper today and for some reason this scene reminded me of Chris Kyle, not sure we are really getting to know what these brave men and women carry around inside of them. Gardens of Stone in my opinion is easily the most underrated war movie perhaps ever made, it questions both sides of war with compelling arguments and does so with a brilliant ensemble cast - @Thursday, January 22, 2015 8:01 AM

I was in the United States Navy, stationed on Ft. Myer in Virginia. (Ft. Myer housed Army, Navy and Air Force). I was there from 1968-1971. This movie brings me to tears. I remember the Old Guard practicing, the funerals, the chapel where I went to church every Sunday. To all those who served in Vietnam God gave you the grace to serve in turbulent times. To all those who died in Vietnam God holds you in his hands and, finally, keeps you safe. - @Wednesday, June 5, 2013 4:14 AM

I served in Vietnam from 1970 to 1972 and when I got back I was stationed at Ft Knox Ky. I had about 5 mo left so I volunteered for the burial detail detachment, we did a lot of funerals all over Kentucky. 'Gardens of Stone' is also my favorite war film. I stayed out for four years and then enlisted in the USMC (Tanks) and stayed for the next 22 years. But still those those burial details are some of my strongest military memories. Take care man - @Friday, March 22, 2013 11:44 PM

Though I no longer have it, a friend sent me the original shooting script, which contained more than a few powerful scenes, and lines, that didn't make the final cut. Only one comes to mind, when it's established that Dell's father served in Korea with the CO, SGM & Can (forgot his rank), a godawful rememberance is unhooked, the night Chinese tanks rolled over their company. Obviously, Copalla couldn't fathom the degree to which their bond was forged. Agree, one of the best,a sexual "Your wife?" - @Monday, March 18, 2013 9:36 PM

As an old in life now retired Navy Aviation vet, I salute you. I actually enjoyed this film as it did in someway portray the closeness of fellow soldiers, as I had with my shipmates which enriched my own life so much. Many are gone now.... but I do not forget. I served in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970 with the 221st Signal Company (Pictorial) and the Southeast Asia Pictorial Center. At a recent reunion we had a discussion about what is the best Vietnam film. For my money it's "Gardens of Stone." Though it didn't take place in Vietnam it was what Vietnam was all about. It is what Memorial Day is all about. - @Monday, May 28, 2012 1:35 PM

I didn't "love" this movie. I was in the Old Guard (A Co.) in 1979 and 1980. I found it a bit cheesy, but the funeral scenes (including this one) are spot one. Some of my proudest time in the Army. - @Thursday, April 12, 2012 3:25 PM
