Ladies in Black is set in Sydney in the summer of 1959, against the backdrop of Australia's cultural awakening, breakdown of class structures, and liberation of women. It tells the coming-of-age story of suburban schoolgirl Lisa, who while waiting for her final high school exam results with dreams of going to the University of Sydney, takes a summer job at a large department store. Here she works side-by-side with a group of saleswomen who open her eyes to a world beyond her sheltered existence, and foster her metamorphosis.

Hmm, set in the year I was born, in my home state but my memories of growing up in Sydney just don't gel with this fanciful 'Strictly Ballroom' style cinematography, however classy it might appear. Trading 'wog' for 'refo' + dodgy European accents in Aussie films leave me cringing, but if the writing saves this one I'm game. The Australian story that really needs to be told is the golden age of pub rock in Sydney in the 70s - particularly Bondi, Coogee, Maroubra and various Northern Beaches pubs. Even the CBD had a notorious venue back then - unthinkable today given rents in that particular gridsquare. Recreating bands that are still very much alive and (in various incarnations) still performing wouldn't be an easy task, but it was about more than what happened onstage. If you were a disco tragic, none of it mattered (only 'bogans' went to see live bands, apparently), but for the rest of us it was salvation from the FM dirge that had Donna Summer and the Bee Gees on constant high rotation. I have to admit that after seeing the trailer I thought the movie wouldn't be the most exciting and I had no interest in seeing it.
