Genres & Description

Action Documentary

6.2 / 10

A subjective documentary that explores the numerous theories about the hidden meanings within Stanley Kubrick's film The Shining (1980). The film may be over 30 years old but it continues to inspire debate, speculation, and mystery. Five very different points of view are illuminated through voice over, film clips, animation and dramatic reenactments. Together they'll draw the audience into a new maze, one with endless detours and dead ends, many ways in, but no way out.

Everyone going to forget that he totally screwed up Shelly Duvall for life? And Dr. Phil took advantage of it years later. Screw Dr. Phil. Kubrick gets a pass if he was really killed by some elitist masquerade orgy cult or something for Eyes Wide Shut. My Ouija board is out. Send me a sign! - @Thursday, October 5, 2017 3:41 PM

Rodney Ascher's desperate attempt to try and second guess Stanley Kubrick. It would appear even with the best material in the world Rodney Ascher lacks the ability and talent to produce anything worth while. - @Tuesday, January 10, 2017 3:46 PM

This is the absolute worst documentary ever made! It talks about things they can't illustrate and apparently they aren't aware of the editing process where shit that interrupts the flow is removed. - @Thursday, November 17, 2016 9:34 AM

There are a few interesting theories on that, but not enough for a 1h40m documentary. Most of it are just crazy ideas. And I needed to express how much annoyed I was by one of the interviewed's laugh, I just couldn't stand him laughing about the most uninteresting realizations he had. - @Sunday, September 25, 2016 4:09 AM

So every single "Trailer" is nothing more than a brief list of perverts and pervert organizations claims' about 237? I don't think there's ever been a movie released with Trailers, where the trailers didn't show a single clip from the movie it was trailing? - @Friday, September 23, 2016 7:55 AM

A great documentary about how art can shift your perceptions of the world. Wish the music didnt mask the audio from the interviews though. - @Friday, September 16, 2016 6:21 AM

Tom bread
I thought this movie was trash until it was pointed out to me that the creators don't believe any of it. They interview people who are delusional and obsessive. It's all about how a piece of art infects the minds of people who aren't all there. Once I rewatched it knowing this I thought it was brilliant. Just my opinion. - @Thursday, September 1, 2016 10:53 PM

This film is nothing but a few insane people (probably Jews) talking about how the Shining is about how "White people genocided the Jews" and "White people genocided the red indians". There by being nothing but yet more self-pitying Anti-White propaganda from Jews. And while much of their theories are insane, they still put up a good argument for The Shining actually being an Anti-White film about the big bad White man and how he is always oppressing Jews and 'coloured people'. Which wouldn't surprise me since Kubrick was a Jew himself. Far from Room 237 being a film _about_ conspiracies, it's a film that's part of one. Peddling the Anti-White Agenda. Muh holocaust! Muh holocaust!" No mention of the 30+ million Christians killed by Jews in the Bolshevik "revolution" of course. - @Sunday, April 3, 2016 12:54 AM

There has been a lot of negative feedback, from people who haven't seen the movie. For a while I agreed with them, but then I gave it a shot. I must say...I am completely blown away. Whether or not Kubrick was "conscious" of these things, the film does get you to think. Even though some of the people on there do seem a bit crazed, altogether they have enough evidence to really make a point. If you are into subtext, and stuff like that, this movie is a must see! - @Monday, September 21, 2015 1:45 AM

Well this "documentary" is retarded.A bunch of tin foil hat schizophrenics pointing out little irrelevant vissual non-intentional details.I think these people just went insane like the main character in the movie. - @Friday, August 8, 2014 4:23 PM

5* from empire 4* from Total film. 2* from me. I really enjoyed Jay Weidner's own personal docs on Kubrick, but this was just not that good. I really don't get the rave reviews. - @Monday, July 7, 2014 8:40 PM

Id say it was fairly entertaining, but it would have stood out a bit more if at least one - just one - theory regarding the symbolism and hidden messages of the film had, well, made any sence. Almost everyone in the movie feels like people who might aswell have seen jesus in their toast, right. One strong theory would have made it a bit more intense, now its just an endless tirade of BS. They almost admit it at the end - they actually have no idea what the hell theyre talking about. - @Tuesday, May 27, 2014 9:15 AM

Wow, I didn't know that people are so offended by this documentary. I guess they didn't understand that the disclaimer in the beginning includes also the makers of this documentary. And they were expecting to hear some sort of hidden "truth"... My only complaint was that the soundtrack music was too loud and unnecessary at some points. - @Saturday, February 22, 2014 11:31 PM

That's interesting, bc in the novel the room is 217 not 237. Also Kubrick had no interest in making a film that followed the novel. He shot the scene of the red VW Bug (car driven by jack in the novel) being crushed by the tractor trailer and used a yellow car to signify just that. That's pretty common knowledge. - @Sunday, September 29, 2013 1:33 AM

Ascher must think he's quite clever, but he assumes that these critics go through an experience like his own ('I was up at 2 in the morning, viewing the movie over and over, and started seeing these things in the it'). He thinks this invalidates the theories he presents, or at least makes them suspect, and that therefore, we are to learn something about 'junk meaning run rampant' in the internet age. Only one problem with all of this: Ascher's wrong. At least 3 of the 5 theories have validity. - @Friday, September 20, 2013 6:47 PM

The Shining is a long involved book by Stephen King which is MUCH more detailed and rich than the film, which is really different from the film adaptation in many ways. Those of us who know the real story, King's book, know EXACTLY what was going on in room 237! We also know why that dude was getting a blowjob from a guy in a chipmunk suit. - @Friday, August 30, 2013 7:30 PM

Watched this the other night, got about half way through but couldn't go on. Genuinely couldn't figure out the point to this, conflicting interpretations left me feeling confused on what I was supposed to be taking away from the movie. One person's stating that The Shining is Kubrick's commentary on the genocide of the Native Americans, then a minute later I'm being told, with the same conviction, from another person that it's actually about the Holocaust. The reviews in this trailer are mad. - @Wednesday, August 7, 2013 12:40 PM
