While it is right to criticise the choices of the filmmakers - especially considering Emmerich being gay himself - I don't think people have taken the time to understand that in order to get a film like this funded for even a "small" $10-12 million (more money than most of us will ever see in our lives) requires guarantees on returns from the investors, so they want the safest bet possible-ie a "relatable white person coming of age" at its core, all the while completely ignoring that this undermines what makes this story so compelling.I completely agree with the criticisms thrown at the film and the people who made it, but at the same time, I don't think they can work in that system and take the risks necessary to play homage to the real protagonists of that story. What it needs is a sensational piece of documentary work, not this glossy soap opera. - @Friday, April 21, 2017 10:42 AM

I watched this movie and loved it. The trailer is misleading. Politically-correct SJWs ruined the box office opening of what is perhaps the best gay rights movie of all-time. - @Wednesday, August 10, 2016 9:41 PM

What about the earlier Stonewall movie from 1995? It had a main black character who seemed trans gender or at least lived where possible as a woman from memory. And also a Latino and white boy as main characters. The White boy was used to connect and contrast the "respectable" gay rights groups of the late fifties to the more violent later rights movement in that movie. Why remake a reasonably good movie and not make it better? - @Tuesday, November 24, 2015 11:25 PM

COMMENTERS: What a bunch of screechy whiny clones you all are. It is NOT a documentary, it's a fictional story set in the context of the riots Stop being so damned self-righteous with your "my way or the highway" bitching. - @Friday, September 25, 2015 7:59 PM

WTF?! A dumb, white hunky blonde twink threw the first brick that kicked off gay civil rights?! This trailer tastes like a kick in the teeth to history. Where are the drag queens - the real, 24 carat gold heroines?! Shameful stuff here - @Friday, September 25, 2015 3:51 AM

Ever since the Jenner decided to put on a skirt it seems that SJW's and progressives are out in force in support of transsexuals. It's great that they've been getting support, but it seems that it's now at the expense of GLB people. Suddenly being gay just isn't enough--to be considered a minority with REAL problems you need to be a fucking transsexual black woman. Otherwise you're a "cis-gendered" white "fagget" (as I was called here) asserting your privilege. Well, I hate to break it to you, but the majority of the patrons at Stonewall were WHITE GAY GUYS. Look at the pictures, watch a documentary. There were a lot of white gay guys, some gay men of color, and very few drag queens. There were a lot of poor, disenfranchised groups, but transgendered individuals were a minority of them. They existed, but they certainly weren't the majority of the patrons and they weren't considered "transsexual," though in retrospect some of them might have been if the term were in use at the time (others were genderqueer, etc.) Many more of the patrons were just straight people who were poor. There was also an assortment of male prostitutes (both gay and straight). The riot itself wasn't just GLBT people, it involved the entire community. Many of those involved were straight. Everyone seems to want to make this about transsexual rights. I hate to break it to you, but they were a small part of a much larger event. To be GENEROUS, according to studies, about 1 in 500 people would be categorized as transgendered (which is an umbrella term that would include transsexuals). To be less generous, around 1 in 1,000. Compare this to gay people who are about 1 in 20 to 1 in 25. It's not "whitewashing" to pick a main character who would actually fit into the majority of people who patronized the club: poor, white, gay men. - @Friday, September 25, 2015 2:36 AM

Everyone back the fuck up for two seconds. Take a look at ACTUAL pictures of the Stonewall riots. A FEW drag queens (not transsexuals, DRAG QUEENS) were there. It was a majority of gay men. In fact, it was a majority of gay, white men. This was the beginning of the GAY RIGHTS MOVEMENT. This was NOT the beginning of the trans movement. In the comments you people are making it sound like this was a black trans-movement. It wasn't. Emmerich is rewriting history, but you people are no better. - @Thursday, September 24, 2015 11:33 PM

"Where Pride Began"!? Really? Typical! Another lame ass film claiming to be a true story when all it does is gloss over the negative aspects of the story, dehumanizes everyone who disagreed with the event, and completely ignores other historical figures that may have played an even bigger role in the movement than the people of Stonewall! True story my ass! The truth of the matter is that Stonewall wasn't the beginning of anything, and not all LGBT people agreed with what those people did that day. In fact, many thought that the behavior of those who participated was an embarrassment to the movement! What really happened was certainly no March on Selma. Now, I'm no expert on the history of the movement, but even I know that this film is woefully inaccurate. But, of course, the mindless masses will buy into it, anyway, and call anyone who criticizes the film a bigot or a homophobe! Ugh! Stupid Emmerich! Even when he actually tries to make a good movie, he royally fucks up! - @Thursday, September 24, 2015 7:31 PM

No. No, no, no. NO. If you're going to make a movie on a historical event, make sure that it's HISTORICALLY ACCURATE. I don't care that he may not "have had te resources" or whatever, but there are enough female trans actresses of color that you could've hired and focused on. Thank you for nothing, Roland Emmerich. Just another example of whitewashed cinema. - @Wednesday, September 23, 2015 4:56 PM

Sarah Sutton
Hell, maybe Danny's journey could have been an allegory for the journey of all cispeople watching this movie. Like, the education of the privileged class or something. But this "straight-acting" appeal to the masses drivel is ridiculous. The white man doesn't always need to be the hero or the storyteller. - @Wednesday, September 23, 2015 4:10 PM

Shufei
Wow, so disappointing. Well, the trailer is sure as hell a whiteciswash extravaganza. I sure hope the film itself ups the tokenism at least a notch. I am sure Hollywood has a hard enough time with gay cis men even now, never mind the rest of us queer rabble. But some of us remember Marsha Johnson, Miss Major, and Silvia Rivera and want to see them take the street as they did. Since every movie is rebooted on a ten year cycle now, hopefully that real Stonewall film is forthcoming. - @Sunday, September 20, 2015 9:41 PM
