Ich fand diesen Film einfach toll. Traurig, dass der Schauspieler Ulrich Mühe kurz nach dem Film gestorben ist. Ein tolles auftreten auf jeden Fall. RIP. - @Wednesday, February 14, 2018 1:13 PM

Well the actress was in a really bad position. Ugh, she even had to have sex with that dirty old man. - @Saturday, October 21, 2017 8:24 PM

Excellent movie, hard hitting, thought provoking, mostly very sad but at least some redemption for one of the protagonists. Seems incredible that not so long ago, this part of Germany had embraced the darkest side of communism so wholeheartedly. For me personally it rings so very tragically true and familiar being old enough to clearly recall life in communist Albania. If you appreciate movies with depth and historical insight, do not miss this one. - @Thursday, August 24, 2017 7:07 AM

Such a profound movie, which highlights how far gone government's must be today with their ability to spy on us. - @Wednesday, August 23, 2017 4:11 PM

Nice trailer. Do you think American audiences will catch Polio if they hear someone speaking a language that isn't English? - @Thursday, August 10, 2017 7:25 PM

Shame on you if you let the language barrier and a so-so trailer keep you from watching one of the film masterpieces of our time, and perhaps the greatest poetic witness to the evil of communism since The GULAG Archipelago. And for those of you who already know its greatness, please check our book on the film: https://www.amazon.com/Totalitarianism-Screen-Politics-Lives-Others/dp/0813144981/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1472058665&sr=1-1 - @Wednesday, August 24, 2016 5:37 PM

What a fantastic movie, if you like movie you should out the IMDB for it, there's some stuff there like this here:All the listening/recording props used in the film are actual Stasi equipment on loan from museums and collectors. The props master had himself spent two years in a Stasi prison and insisted upon absolute authenticity down to the machine used at the end of the film to steam-open up to 600 letters per hour. - @Friday, October 9, 2015 10:55 AM

Films like "The Lives of Others," which indicate that many were coerced into spying on friends and neighbors, don't come close to plumbing the depths that some ultimately fall to. Friends informed voluntarily on friends and spouses even tattled on each other. More often than not, the Stasi did not need to apply pressure at all. In fact, many often felt snubbed if their information was deemed to be of no interest. The real motivation behind these acts of betrayal was much more humdrum than one might think. People informed for personal gain, out of loyalty to the East German regime, or simply because they wanted to feel like they had some power, - @Thursday, August 21, 2014 11:23 AM

This is clearly a western film. The idea that a Stasi agent's personality changed by spying on someone is completely ridiculous. Many Stasi agents were not affected by what they saw, in fact I haven't heard of a real life Stasi agent who was like Wiesler unless someone can prove me wrong.  - @Monday, March 17, 2014 2:29 PM

I had a discussion with my AP European History class a few months ago about civil liberties. Luckily, many of us students who had studied Europe's tribulations agreed that it was our duty to uphold those liberties even at the risk of danger. The students of my other classes disagreed. We are growing up in post-9/11 America, where freedom is not the all-encompassing idea it once was. Americans nowadays commonly believe in partial liberty with the benefit of *possible* safety. We are ignorant now. - @Tuesday, July 2, 2013 2:45 AM

In Australia, 576p (European equivalent of 480p) is legally HD. Caused some outcry amongst TV watchers here until they turned HD off. Now we don't even have that. - @Saturday, June 1, 2013 12:16 PM

The worst thing is that this puppet state of pathetic communist bureaucrats did exist. It's hard to explain even to young Germans that this is not science fiction. This state of crime, mass terror, police micromanagement and repression did exist. People died in police custody. People gave away their neighbours. No deviation from the party line was allowed for anyone. - @Saturday, April 13, 2013 3:28 PM

So what you're saying is that someone not agreeing with you two half-wits, when you're saying a democratically elected official is some sort of Hitler, is by default a wannabe dictator. Thankis for validating my point about your brainless fascism. - @Sunday, March 17, 2013 6:42 AM

So when you say it got worde under Obama, you mean you're living in a autocratic, authoritarian regime - because that's the next step. Of course, since you have no actual idea what any political term means, as do all FOXNews viewers, "Communism", "Authoritarian regime" and "Nazi" are just swear words you apply to anyone you don't like personally. I know your type and I know you won't listen to reason. Therefore: Go fuck yourself, dickhead. - @Friday, March 15, 2013 7:50 AM

Yeah, right... little hint: In the last 20 years, the US were defined by political scientists as a defunct democracy (i.e. something like Russia) during the presidency of only one guy - George W. Bush. And rightly so. - @Tuesday, February 5, 2013 5:33 PM
