In the heart of America's opioid epidemic, four men attempt to reinvent their lives and reenter society sober after years of drug abuse. This broke my heart, addiction in all forms is so hard and made harder that addicts are looked on as lesser parts of society. To anybody struggling my hope is that you find your way to a clean and sober life - @Sunday, November 4, 2018 8:14 PM

I think alcohol addictions affect society more than heroine, there is an epidemic of alcoholism but you dont see much being done about it. Totally the opposite actually with all the constant advertising movies, tv radio. Alcohol is a bad drug and something needs to be done about it like not selling the shit in the first place - @Wednesday, September 5, 2018 3:31 AM

This was a great documentary. As a recovering opiate addict, nearly 5 years into recovery I must say this documentary was spot on.. IF you don't understand addiction, IF you're the type of person who doesn't believe it's a disease, or have the kick them in the gutter mentality as I faced and still face today then this is a MUST WATCH for YOU! I went to a very similar inpatient treatment program here in New Hampshire called the TRAILS Program. The biggest difference is that you're in a treatment center within a county jail setting. You have educational classes for four months Monday-Friday 8-5 PM, with subjects from wellness class, drug and alcohol education, Mindfulness, a course called Thinking for a chance, create a relapse treatment plan, have one on one and group counseling daily, and you live with up to 32 other men in a door setting with 16 per room all going thru the same exact struggles as you. You're also learning from teachers that have mostly been in your shoes before and succeed in recovery and that helps a ton as well. Before and After those classes you're not only in treatment but you're also an inmate. You live there, you can't leave, can't sign yourself out, etc. The ONLY bonuses you have over other inmates in the jail part of the facility are 1. 1 Weekly 55 minute contact visit 2. The walls aren't concrete. Once you achieve your graduation from the phase 1, the educational and therapeutic phase you move onto phase 2, still in the same facility just in a new unit that's called Work Release. No more classes and you can go into the community and look for work and/or actually work. You have to return each day and you sleep in the facility only. You stay in that unit another 2-3 months then slowly move into phase III. It starts with Home visits, an 8 hour furlough and then a 24 hour furlough then finally you graduate out of the facility and are allowed home, on electronic monitoring and a color system. The Bracelet is $122.50 a week. You have to work to afford it, that's the point I think. You call a hotline each and every night at 8 PM and IF they call your color out of 6 possible colors you have to report the following day at 1 of 2 set times for a UA and if you miss it you're moved back into the facility right then and there IF you comply you're on House Arrest. You have to schedule your entire week ahead on the Saturday prior, other than for employment you can only leave a total of 4 hours a week for personal time such as shopping, appointments, etc and have a required meeting every week called After Care along with the UA's. After one year in After Care you graduate the TRAILS program if you've had no dirty UA's, no write ups, and no disciplinary issues or new charges. Our Trails program here in NH WORKS because it's based completely around ACCOUNTABILITY and Personal Responsibility and you're NOT rushed right back out into the real world before you're ready and there are consequences if you fail. Probation doesn't help anyone, you're given too much slack and people never take it seriously until AFTER it's too late. I spent 8 years on probation.. my probation office came to my home a total of 3 times in that time. They collect their money each month and you see them twice a year if you're giving clean UA's. I Graduated the above program TWICE before I got it right, the first time I relapsed with less than 3 days left of my entire 18 month program after being on EM for over 3.5 months.. As READY for the real world as I thought I was, I wasn't.. I went back to the same friends, same town, same everything and that doesn't work.. it just won't. You may feel like superman, ready to succeed but tread lightly because the first 6 months especially after you come is the biggest challenge of all. IF your friends aren't on the same page as you and still use they're not your friends. I had to start over from rock bottom. I deleted my Social Media, my contacts, everything.. IF you were my true friend you knew where to find me, it's amazing too that when you do get sober and are successful in recovery that you realize how many friends were just there when you were an addict, when you partied, when he got high .. they're not your friends. I"m a single Father now of an amazing just turned 5 year old, the day he was born my entire life changed and he's the reason I stay clean and will keep taking it one day at a time. I'm also a certified recovery coach as well and took a very similar path as one of the residents in this film and he really clicked with me and if you watch it you will be the most surprised which one does truly succeed as well I'm sure. Sorry for the novel but i just wanted to explain to others what other programs are like and I really enjoyed this film. - @Thursday, August 2, 2018 11:00 PM

Jeff doesn't need to work in the mines. If he did the work to get out of his mess, he could easily become a model. He has a great look with cheekbone that go up to next week. - @Sunday, July 29, 2018 7:12 PM

Hits so close to home and sent tears down my face. I struggled with opiates for six plus years. I have lost numerous friends to this disease. It is real and the media portrayal is usually so false. I am glad they are showing the recovery side. Recovery is possible. It is possible without suboxone or methadone. In October 15, 2014, I went to a place similar to this. It was not an 18 month program, but a three month program but was built on the same concepts. I now am coming up on four years of sobriety and am twenty six years old. If I can do it, anyone can do it. My life is a miracle today and if you are struggling, please find a meeting and share you where you are. There are people there to help at no charge. You don't having to keep digging your bottom further and further. You can become a miracle also. Much love. - @Saturday, July 7, 2018 8:44 PM

This is a wonderful documentary. I cried at the end I was so proud of how far some had came. That Dr. is obviously a saint. He saw a community in need and stepped up. He knew how difficult it was after watching his son struggle through the same addiction. He is a hero. - @Wednesday, July 4, 2018 3:17 AM

My Testimony How my life was changed! I smoked pot every day for ten years starting at the age of 13. At the age of 16 I tried heroin for the first time and after trying it for the first time I wanted more just four hours later, I was hooked. Six months later I put cocaine with the heroin and for two years I was strung-out on speedballs. I got sucked-up and skinny with tracks all the way down my arms and wanted to change but did not know how. I kept using for five more years. One day I came to a place in my life where I thought I wasn't going to change, I thought I was going to be a drug addict for the rest of my life, I broke-down crying in my room and asked God if there was anybody out there that can change my life. My dad came into my room and said "look at you, look what you've become" but what he was really saying is "I don't know what to do with you, I don't know how to help you". But that night God heard my cry! After doing some jail time a guy from Victory Outreach church came and told me that they have a rehabilitation home and that Jesus Christ can change my life. I was ready for change! On July 19, 1991 I gave my life to The Lord Jesus Christ and went into the Victory Outreach men's home, I call it the (gusano) (that worm) that desire to use drugs was removed from my life By God. I don't know how but all I know, it was in the mist of God's word and God's people by prayer and supplication I got delivered and I've been clean ever sense. "Glory be to God" Romans 10:9 says "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved". - @Sunday, July 1, 2018 9:35 PM

Northern WV looks like a really depressing place to get high. The true mountaineers need to find these dealers from Michigan and New York and run their sorry asses out on a rail! These big city hustlers are destroying WV’s youth and future. So many professional criminals have relocated to WV for the sole purpose of selling heroin. Run those assholes off! And give the corrupt pill doctors a swift kick in the ass too! - @Saturday, June 30, 2018 4:22 PM

My heart goes out to the guy who's daughter was molested in the foster home she was put into. I know it's hard being there and not for your child but I know she'd want you in there bro to get better. Finish this to not only do it for yourself but to do it for your daughter and get her back. Much love bro. Hope they put that bastard in prison for good. I will laugh and cry but mostly cry. These boys are family and will always be. Jacobs Ladder is a family that grows by the month. To see the men come in broken and then to see them form into the human beginnings that we know that they are is beautiful. Even with the set backs that some have the investment into their lives is everything! They become family from the moment that they come through the door. So proud of your continued effort even if you leave the family unit there is always a place to return. You are our brothers. Love you guys!! - @Wednesday, June 20, 2018 5:19 AM

I started using drugs when I was twelve years old and was heavily addicted to Heroin for thirteen years. I was one hundert percent sure I`m gonna die as an addict. I got sober with Narcotics Anonymous, for almost three years now. I got a new life and since I`m clean things have happened in my life that were beyond my wildest dreams. All I can say is that there is hope and change is possible. - @Sunday, June 17, 2018 9:48 PM

I was there with the people in the trailer. The doc is about a 6 month treatment center that takes a different approach to conventional treatment centers. Idk if I'm in it (didn't want to be), but there was around 6 to 12 of us at any time. Ryan has done great but Jeff and Adam not so much. Staying clean is hard so I'm not bashing them but I don't even associate with them anymore. Program is in Aurora, WV and it's called Jacob's Ladder if you need help. Joey will get you taken care of even if the program doesn't meet your requirements. Saved my life tbh. - @Wednesday, June 13, 2018 2:55 AM
