To all the sexist people complaining about the word "feminist" in the trailer: go see the movie! I saw it and I honestly would not classify it as overtly feminist. The characters aren't exactly defying traditional gender roles or trying to promote gender equality, they simply are trying to survive (I wish the film was more feminist). Yes, the protagonist (Brit Marling's character) is shown doing traditionally male jobs, like hunting and chopping wood, out of necessity, but there also is a scene where she worries about women whose male relatives are in the war "learning to be a man instead of a wife". By the end of the film, the three heroes disguise themselves as men to escape the approaching Union army (make of that what you will). Also, the movie really doesn't address the racial aspect of the situation, and, to be honest, it felt a bit insulting. As much as the movie tries to portray them as united, independent women fighting for their lives and dignity- and I wish the movie had succeeded at this- the two sisters never let Mad (the slave) forget her inferior position, and, when it comes down to it, are perfectly comfortable with slavery. And, even worse, Mad also never seems to consider resisting slavery, even though she has plenty of opportunity with the societal breakdown brought by the war, and she never considers that the Union army could give her her freedom. The elder sister inadvertently brings Mad a lot of pain in the film (no spoilers), and, although there is a scene where she appears to be feeling guilty about it, she never apologizes. - @Sunday, May 29, 2016 8:16 AM
